Salt Water Swimming Pools

Salt Water Pools Chlorine generators are the easiest and most effective way to keep your pool clean.  Chlorine generators are a piece of equipment added to your standard pool equipment that transforms salt into chlorine.  Gone are the days of adding chlorine tablets to your chlorinator and spending hundreds of dollars a year on buckets of chlorine tablets. Once installed, chlorine generators only require that you add salt to the generator; usually once in a large quantity at the start of the season and then depending on the usage of your pool, you may need to add a small amount during the course of the season.  They are a great choice for your swimming pool because they’re very user friendly and can be set and left alone to chlorinate your pool. Another great feature of the chlorine generator is that the salt used to chlorinate your pool makes the water softer and is better for your eyes, skin, as well as your bathing suits.  Your skin will notice the difference from the dryness with chlorine tablets to the smooth, soft salt water from your chlorine generator. A chlorine generator will make a great addition to everyone’s swimming pool.  Also, for a limited time we are offering an IntelliChlor Chlorine Generator at the discounted price of $1,795.00 installed, a $100 savings!  (offer valid through...

To Be Thankful…

Thanksgiving is a time of reflection and appreciation.  At O’Brien Swimming Pool Service we are thankful for our safety, health, and happiness.  We are also thankful for our wonderful customers; without them we would not be here today. We thought we would share a few inspirational quotes of what others have been thankful for. “I am grateful for what I am and have.  My thanksgiving is perpetual…” Henry Thoreau “I am thankful for serendipitous moments in my life, where things could’ve gone the other way.”  Rick Springfield “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more.  If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never ever have enough.”  Oprah Winfrey Thank you for your continued business and support. May your family have a Happy Thanksgiving!...

Winter Swimming Pool Service

O’Brien Swimming Pool Service would like to make sure your swimming pool is properly taken care of this winter. We are here to help in any way we can. O’Brien Swimming Pool Service can sign you up for our Winter Service Program which provides maintenance for your swimming pool, pool cover, and pool equipment for the winter season. Each month we will come out to your pool and pump the stagnant water off of your pool cover, check and adjust your cover as needed, check your pool equipment, add chlorine if needed and clean off all leaves (disposing of the leaves comes with an additional price). Our Winter Service Program will help your pool clear up faster in the spring after your pool opening. We can also provide you with a cover pump if you would prefer to maintain your own pool in the winter. All you need is an old garden hose and an extension cord to have your pump up and running. Simply plug in the pump, when needed, to lower the water in the pool or to pump off the stagnant water on top of your pool cover. Please note that you should always unplug pump when not needed. Call us for pricing on a new cover pump. To extend the life of your cover pump and to avoid minor electrical shortages you will need to unplug your pump whenever the weather is below freezing. The optimal use of the cover pump is to plug it in (while the temperature is above freezing) when there is water on your cover and unplug the pump as soon as...

What are Phosphates and where do they come from?

Phosphates are found in nature and are the combination of Phosphorus and Oxygen, PO4:to be precise (source: Wikipedia).  This ion contributes to the process of photosynthesis in plants which then is ingested and released by animals as well as humans.  Phosphates can be found in fertilizers, mulch, natural based chemicals, acid rain, grass clippings, soil, clothing detergent, etc.  Plants in any form, including chemicals, can cause your pool to have high phosphate levels.  Algae growth can be accelerated by enhanced phosphate levels.  Algae use phosphates as a food source and therefore will most likely increase as your phosphate levels rise.  It is also possible to have phosphates even though your pool water is completely balanced. At O’Brien Swimming Pool Service, we believe that the best way to rid your pool of phosphates and algae growth from phosphates, is to use a chemical Phosphate Remover.  This chemical will clear up your phosphates and in turn clear up your algae.  If you have any questions or would like your swimming pool tested for phosphates please call O’Brien Swimming Pool Service at...

Cloudy pool? The Solution is Clear! Just follow these steps:

Why is my pool water cloudy? There are many factors that contribute to the clarity of your swimming pool water, therefore there are multiple options to why your pool water is cloudy. 1.  The first option is that your water chemistry is off balance. This could be due to low sanitizer levels, high pH levels, or high calcium hardness.  Maintaining proper water chemistry can be a science at times, no pun intended : )  The weather as well as landscaping can play a role in throwing your water off balance from time to time.  The best starting place is to test your water and see if everything is in line.  If you find that this is your issue, then all you have to do is add the proper chemicals to adjust your pool water. 2. Another option for your cloudy pool water could be poor filtration. Examples of poor filtration include clogged skimmer baskets, running your equipment for too short of a time period (not allowing all of your pool water to circulate through your equipment daily), your filter may need to be backwashed, or your lines could be clogged.  Most of this list you can check yourself, but if you need your lines pressured tested it would be best to call your local, trusted swimming pool service company. O’Brien Swimming Pool Service would be more than happy to help you with this!  Give us a call with any questions at...

Prep for Fun in the Sun

As the swimming season approaches and we are all counting down the days until constant warm weather, more hours in the sun, and of course time   spent with our family and friends in our swimming pool; we at O’Brien want to remind you to always keep your skin protected.  Tanning beds do not prepare your skin for increased sun exposure over the summer; they are only harmful and damaging to your skin.  Please remember to wear sun screen any time you are outdoors.  Even when there is cloud cover you can be exposed to the sun’s damaging rays.  Here is a link to the American Cancer Society of suggestions on How to Protect Your Skin.  We at O’Brien Swimming Pool Service want you to be able to enjoy yourself in your backyard with family and friends and we would like to enhance that experience in any way possible! Here is another link to the American Cancer Society for a “Sun Safety Quiz”   Take the quiz to make sure you and your family are informed and protected.   O’Brien Swimming Pool Service would like to wish everyone a safe and happy...
